PRESS RELEASE FOR OUR MAY 21, 2017 SALE
 
William Jenack’s auction of May 21, 2017 will be an eclectic sale which will include Flow Blue, Persian miniature paintings, African art and masks, mineral specimens, Oriental rugs and carpets, fine art, antique and mid-century furnishings, Chinese porcelain, and silver.
Leading the way in fine art will be a massive canvas (nearly 6 x 6’) of a woman in Middle Eastern dress by Eben Farrington Comins (American 1875-1949). Comins was born in Boston and studies at Harvard and at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. He exhibited extensively in the United States and other counties. In 1915 he won a gold medal for the teaching of art at the Panamanian Exhibition. He taught for more than thirty years at St. Paul’s School of Fine Arts and other campuses in New England. He crossed nearly every genre of painting but is mostly noted for portraits and landscapes. The artwork will carry a presale estimate of $8000-$12000. Another artwork to be offered of female beauty is by a contemporary French artist Marc Clauzade (France 1957_) the work titled “Chez Madona” is a watercolor and gouache of a chic woman in a broad rimmed had and fitted full length dress in a Paris café. Other art offerings include an oil on panel of an untitled still life by Jankel Adler (Polish/British 1895-1945) with Tel Aviv Museum label verso; lithographic poster Absolute Vodka by Keith Haring (American 1959-1990) inscribed and signed edition of 100; a mixed media on College paper “Liberty Head” by Peter Max (American 1934-); watercolor landscape with hunter and dog by John E. Costigan (American 1888-1972); and a screen print on plastic by Victor Vasarely (Hungarian/French 1906-1997).
Furniture offerings to include a pair of Restoration Hardware leather club chairs with ottoman, Victorian carved walnut china cabinet with onyx top, Country French painted cupboard, Haverty’s leather armchair and ottoman, 18th century French Provincial carved oak cupboard, repurposed railroad trolley coffee table, Louis Philippe style burl inlaid cabinet, George Nelson for Knoll credenza, set of five Hans Wegner design chairs for Povl Dinesen, Hughes Chevalier Paris armchair, Adrian Pearsall for Craft Associates walnut and glass coffee table and a Philippine Spanish Colonial altar table.
Sterling silver lots will include Reed & Barton “Newport” oval tray and bread bowl, Manchester charger, Austria-Hungary tray, International Silver “Revere” presentation bowl, Mexican Sombrero, Camusso Peruvian gravy with attached under plate, Austria-Hungary reticulated handled bowl and a Whiting reticulated bowl.
Chinese porcelains to be sold include a celadon crackle glaze Meiping vase, flattened crimson glazed vase bearing Ch’ien Lung seal form mark, blue and white decorated vase bearing a K’ang His mark, pair of sancai glazed temple guardians, blue and white decorated baluster form vase bearing K’ang His mark, blue and white decorated cylinder vase bearing spurious Yung Cheng seal form mark, Famille Rose decorated vase with dedication and a pair of vases mounted as lamps of the Republic period.
Other lots of note are a planetary orrery made by Van Cort Instruments, carved marble fragment of an angel and bird, bronze after Joseph D’Aste “See Saw”, Venetian silver gilt mirror, after Frederick Remington “The Bronco Buster” and a Continental distressed beveled porthole mirror.
